Tips to plan a budget family holiday to Barcelona, Spain

Spain is not just popular for FC Barcelona, but it's also one of the loveable family holiday destinations, especially during the summer break when the adults enjoy getting sun kissed while the children love running around and spending time outdoors. Since families have lots of expenses to cater to, there are many including us who feel better opting for budget family holidays. Therefore, I’m going to share some tips to plan a trip to Spain in low budget. Since it's is a huge country and there are lots of family travel options, I believe Barcelona can be a perfect low budget family holiday destination.

Plan a trip to Barcelona’s beaches

Before the Olympic Games held in 1992, Barcelona used to be a city without any beaches but now it has nine beaches. Sant Sebastià, Sant Miquel, La Barceloneta and Somorrostro are not only the oldest beaches in Barcelona, but they’re also easily reachable by bus and the former two are great for children because of shallow water. Also, there are lots of bars and restaurants in the area for adults to grab a drink or some hot grub. Since they’re sandy beaches, the children can easily run around and play with sand toys. Trip to the beach is free, so it wouldn’t cost you anything and it would make a fantastic day out with kids. If you don’t wish to buy food from the restaurants, it’s always a good idea to take a picnic box.

Magic Fountain Show - Montjuic

The Magic Fountain Show is a spectacular display of music, water, and light and a must-see especially for those visiting Barcelona. The evening shows being during summers in 2018 are held from Wednesday to Sunday (9:30 pm – 10.30 pm, June - Sep) and winter shows from Thursday to Saturday (9:00 - 10:00 pm in October & 8:00 - 9:00 in November & December). Since the admission is free, one can spend a lovely evening with family enjoying the fountain without spending a single penny. It’s advised to check the date & timing before visiting. Moreover, since Spain has beautiful architecture and many buildings have been built in the historic times, the works of the famous Spanish architecture Antoni Gaudi can be seen everywhere and the adults can catch a beautiful view of the sunset from Montjuic.

Visit Mercat La Boqueria

Reaching this local lively Spanish market where one can see the hustle bustle of the shoppers busy buying the local produce such as fruits and vegetables. Moreover, besides sea food and butchers’ displays, there were also many others stalls such as candy and sweet stalls that can be very attractive for kids and adults alike. Tapas bars, pizza stalls are also present just in case the visitors need to stop for a bite.

Visit La Rambla Street

For a quintessential Barcelona experience, this 1km-long walkway and a tourist trap lined with regal historical buildings is perfect to spend some time by going on a stroll. All popular brands can be seen on the street, along with eateries and why not enjoy a gelato after a stroll or after a quick meal. One needs at least a few hours to see the entire place, and starting from Plaza Catalunya, you can end at the Monument of Columbus. However, since the walk is spread across a few miles, it is advised to wear comfortable footwear. Also, its a tourist trap and on precautionary measures its better to be aware of any pickpockets that might be around and the boards around the street would also remind tourists to keep this in mind.

Visit Familia Segrada

Designed by architect Antoni Gaudi, the church tops the list of top attractions to visit in Barcelona. The unique and intricate design attracts a lot of tourists from all over the world, making it a tourist trap and there's a train station nearby, making it extremely convenient for family travel. The church is free to see and take photos from the outside and the architecture is mind blowing, however depending on the budget you can decide if you would like to see it from the inside because that would require entry tickets. It's advised to purchase the tickets online, prior to the visit and if traveling in a group of 9 or more people, visitors can avail a discount.

Tips to travel in Barcelona

It’s always a better idea to purchases passes as it’s not just convenient, but also saves money if they’re bought for 2 or more days rather than buying a ticket each time one needs to board on the train to visit a tourist destination. This not just saves money while traveling, but is also very convenient when traveling with kids or with family. Besides that, Hop-on Hop-off buses are always available and can be a good option to explore Barcelona. When traveling with kids, they’re convenient as many train stations in Barcelona do not have lifts or either have just one side escalators (mostly downwards).
