Spending 24 hours in Southampton & Stay at Jurys Inn - Southampton, UK

Who doesn’t love a family road trip? Doing some pre-journey shopping and stocking up the car with snacks and drinks before leaving can be a very interesting task especially for someone like me who totally enjoys shopping for snacks. Although traveling with a roof-down of your vehicle can make the trip even more enjoyable, but that works out only in summer. However, some adventurous winter road trips have their own charm, as one doesn’t get stuck in traffic congestion. I’ve done loads of road trips within the UK and to the other European countries, and I always find them more convenient and economical.

As both, my husband and I are fond of traveling and of exploring new places, we decided to explore the South of the UK and decided to start our trip by stopping at Hampshire. From East Kent, our first stop was the Marwell Zoo in Winchester and after being lucky enough for a sunny sky, we headed to our hotel - Jurys Inn located in Southampton.

Although Jurys Inn Southampton does not have its own car park, it wasn't problematic to look for something nearby. After a quick search, we decided to park at the nearest spot as we weren’t in a mood of walking too much with luggage and with the little one, and ended up parking at the King’s Park council parking lot which was hardly 2 mins by walk from the hotel.

After a smooth check-in and a very friendly talk with the receptionist, we discovered the restaurant at Jurys Inn Southampton serves Halal chicken and that literally made me jump in excitement from the inside, as I’ve hardly heard of any hotel in the UK serving Halal chicken at their restaurant. However, we had our dinner reservation at a Halal Brazilian restaurant in Southampton and so we had to go there.

Jurys Inn Southampton provides free WiFi to the hotel guests, and I’m glad that it worked well because BabyN’ gets quite fussy when there’s a disruption in the connection, while he’s watching his favourite program on the iPad.

Some of the amenities in our hotel room included a hair dryer, towels, iron and iron-stand, tea/coffee facility in the room, TV, toiletries (shampoo, hand wash & body wash) and glass water bottles, both sparkling and still. I also found the Holy Bible in one of the drawers in the TV unit. Moreover, cot is available free of charge, and I was quite surprised about this because generally hotels charge extra for providing cots for children.

Near the hotel, the guests can find tourist spots and attractions which can be seen both on foot, or on a vehicle. Like always, we used our own personal car as the mode of transportation so explored the area by car. However, after checking in we first decided to take rest for some time, and later on headed to see the Bargate, the Old City walls and the waters of Southampton but it got a little dark so we decided to visit again the next morning and instead headed towards the Westquay shopping center at the Harbour Parade. The mall had an amazing display of lights, and I was lucky enough to visit the Westquay for the Festival of Light on the Esplanade and to witness the breath-taking digital projections on the city walls of Southampton. Heofon Light Maze, Arboeal, Bloom & Illumaphonium were the highlights, & my favourites too! After seeing the light show, we then headed to a restaurant for dinner after which we headed back to Jurys Inn Southampton as it started getting chilly.

On reaching back to our hotel, BabyN’ enjoyed a bubble bath before going to bed and was really excited to splash water, and to show me some of his water stunts. I had a really comfortable sleep and quite liked the clean and crisp bedding.

The next morning, we were all charged up to explore Southampton and for the rest of the day’s plans. Breakfast is served at the restaurant downstairs, and has different timing for different days. I’d advise you to make sure about the breakfast timing from the reception before heading towards your room. The best part of the breakfast besides the food itself was that BabyN’ was handed over an activity pack that made him feel overjoyed. The set included a pack of crayons, a game, pages for colouring and a sheet of animals. The buffet breakfast at Jurys Inn Southampton included both hot and cold items, fruits, a variety of juices and different varieties of cereal, to name a few!

Our packing was complete as I had packed most of the stuff before going to bed, and so we checked out of the hotel to explore the areas we wanted to see in sunlight after which we went ahead with our road trip to another city in the South of England.

Some of the places to explore when in Southampton include the Southampton harbour, town walls of Southampton, Bargate and the town center and the Westquay Shopping center. Tudor House & Garden would also be a great place to spend time, but it’s better to go there in summer. While I was checking about the things to see in Southampton, I also came across Netley Abbey which was just a 12 minutes drive from our hotel, but I was a bit hesitant to explore the area because it seems to be haunted and I didn’t want to take BabyN’ there. Mostly, the English Heritage sites are charged and the visitors need to purchase tickets for an entry. However, the entry at the Netley Abbey is free and also offers free parking but if you want to be really adventurous, then make sure to check their opening days and timing before planning the visit as they may vary in different seasons.

The overall experience of staying at Jurys Inn Southampton was great, and I’d definitely think about it as an option to stay if I visit Southampton again or maybe in some other city as well, as they’ve got their hotels in 36 cities in the UK.
